  FIREMAN’S FILTHY 4th

Amy: My family’s backyard Fourth of July fireworks show gets out of hand and next thing I know I’m being rescued by six foot six sexy fireman Benjamin Burns. I can feel his rock hard abs, bulging biceps, and powerful chest underneath his fireman's suit as he carries me to safety. But I get a different feeling all together after I slide down his pole, only to find out after that he’s my best friend’s dad. I’ve been in my hunky hero’s arms once before, but I can’t get carried away and wind up there for good…no matter how perfect and safe it feels.

Benjamin: She’s the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen, let alone rescued. When I got the dispatch call for a botched fireworks display I knew I’d be shutting down one kind of fireworks for the night, but I had no idea she’d be lighting the fuse on another. She’s a sassy siren with curves in all the right places. We share a hot night, but what she doesn’t share with me is the knowledge that she’s my daughter’s best friend. I should step away, but this is one smoldering hot little lady I can’t resist.

  CHAPTER 1

  Amy

“And now, for the moment you’ve all been waiting for,” my dad says.

He picks up the drone controller that he drove all the way to the state line to buy. He took my brother last week and they came back with a truckload of fireworks, but this was the “big bang bonanza,” he had been telling everyone about all week.

The only moment I was waiting for now was for this night to end.

I love fireworks, apple pie, and the 4th of July as much as the next person, but today has dragged on way too long. My dad’s friends were drunk, my mom was a nervous wreck from entertaining so many people all day, and my brother’s energy level through it all never ceased to take a break. Sugary snacks and soda kept him hyper all day and it was driving me crazy.

I just wanted to go back inside and cuddle up with a good book, or maybe catch up on a few episodes of my favorite TV shows, knowing all too well I’d be sawing logs the minute I pressed play.

But I put on a happy face, knowing the end was near. Once this final firework did its thing, the guests would start to clear out so I could pass out. Washing all the dirty dishes with my mom would have to wait until morning.

But this was no ordinary fireworks finale. My dad said the creepy fireworks guy he had bought this thing off of described it as the “Throttler 3000.” It was “guaranteed to put your 4th of July celebration in overdrive.”

Just what I need right now.

And to make matters worse this thing came with a controller. It was some “revolutionary” type of firework that you could power like a drone. What ever happened to just shooting them in the sky and watching the pretty colors pop? Testosterone…that’s what happened.

“Stand back, son. You read the instructions. This can only be operated by a professional.”

  “You’re not a professional, dad.”

“But I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.”

The two of them laugh and I bury my head in my knees as I start to feel the dew forming on the grass and soaking its way through my jeans.

“Maybe we should all step inside and watch this through the patio glass,” my mom offers.

“Nonsense. I’ve got this under control. Plus you’ll want to remember this moment. You’ve all got a front row seat to the future of how 4th of July fireworks demonstrations will be.”

“Yeah!” my brother says as he pumps his fist.

“Okay. Three…two…one!” my dad says, pushing a button on his controller.

  Nothing.

“It’s a dud!” one of my dad’s friends yells.

  “The future, huh?” another adds.

They can’t wait to tease him.

But then a spark appears at the base of the firework. Then another. My dad pulls back on the joystick and it begins hovering just off the ground.

Maybe this isn’t so bad after all. It’s kind of cool actually.

My dad focuses on the screen in front of him, his tongue out like Michael Jordan, as he guides the firework up into the sky.

I have to admit, it’s pretty impressive. I’m even kind of proud of my
dad. He acts like a kid a lot of the time, but his intentions are good. And it looks like he might just deliver one heck of a “big bang bonanza” just like he promised.

“Ready everyone?” my dad asks, once the firework is safely overhead.

“Ready!” we reply, nearly in perfect unison.

  “Three…”

He just can’t get enough of this counting down thing.

  “Two…one!”

He presses a different button and the firework starts spinning in a circle like some sort of flying saucer. From the top a red flame shoots up toward the sky, followed by a loud crack, and those little lights that look like the tips of a weeping willow cascade everywhere. It’s beautiful. I even catch myself nodding in approval.

  “Nice job, dad,” I say.

“Thanks, but that’s just the beginning. You ain’t seen nothin' yet.”

He presses another button and suddenly the firework starts smoking.

What in the heck is this supposed to be? I watch as the smoke cloud grows bigger. This doesn’t look right.

Out of nowhere the firework starts shooting sparks and beelines it right toward the house.

“Run!” my mom says, as way too many guests rush for patio door at once.

“Oh my gosh!” I say, deciding the only safe option is to high tail it towards the forest.

Two of my dad’s friend’s bolt toward the swimming pool, pulling at the bottom of their shirts as they’re airborne, just before they come down with a big splash.

  It’s pure mayhem!

I hear tires squeal and look back over my shoulder. My dad’s friend Jerry is burning rubber in the driveway as he peels out making a quick getaway. I guess he’s not as dumb as he looks. Thank god he was one of the few people who wasn’t drinking today.

I duck behind a tree and see the firework bounce off the top of our house before circling the neighbor’s house and then coming back towards our tree line. It gets tangled in the treetop, and suddenly there’s a big explosion.

And of course it’s been the driest fifty years on record in Southern California, and somehow we missed the dramatic recovery the news pundits like to talk about. The tree catches fire immediately. And then it spreads from tree to tree to tree.

  It’s coming right my way.

I take off running back towards the house, as I hear the fire engine sirens off in the distance.

  “Help!”

  CHAPTER 2

  Benjamin

Our engine hasn’t even stopped, as I jump off the side and start booking it towards the backyard.

I heard a woman scream and in times like these fractions of a second make all the difference.

I’ve never ran so fast in my life. It’s one thing to run along the beach each morning against the hands of a stopwatch. It’s entirely another when you know lives are in danger and your adrenaline is pumping through your veins.

I look up and see the tree line burning. “Over here!” I yell back to my crew.

I look over my shoulder and see the hose is already on its way.

I see a girl running like a chicken with its head cut off. I subconsciously calculate her speed and distance and change my direction, intercepting her and grabbing her around the waist as I’m in full stride.

I scoop her up, and see the grass on fire in front of us. My training kicks in and my eyes immediately scan for a safe place.

Nothing. The fire has circled us, and if I don’t get us out of here fast we’re in deep trouble.

I hear something off in the distance and spot two middle-aged guys panting.

  Thank god!

I take off towards the pool, seeing the window of opportunity closing right in front of my face.

The fire is tearing across the grass and it’s a race to see who can get to the pool first.

I’m not going to lose. No one dies on my watch. I get in, and get 'em out safe…every time.

The light brown, dry grass is quickly turning red in front of me. I feel my legs burn, but I don’t care.

The pool is close, but the flames are closer.

It’s dark, but I can see the edge of the pool.

“Out of the way!” I yell.

I don’t even have time to get my steps in order.

I’m running at top speed and just as I feel the grass turn to concrete under my boots I jump.

We’re floating through the air for what seems like forever. I reach my hand up, tucking her head into my chest, preparing her for impact. I wrap my body around hers and do a barrel roll in the air, in case we hit something hard. My body will absorb the impact, keeping her safe.

  Splash!

My mind’s racing. Water. How deep is this pool?

I kick hard in my boots, holding my breath. I’ve got to get her to the surface.

I kick again. My suit is too heavy.

I kick like a wild man and suddenly feel the air against my face.

“Uh-uh!” she coughs, but she’s alive.

I continue kicking, and holding her above the water, realizing we’re in the deep end.

“Hold on!” I say as I roll over onto my back, keeping her on top of me as I kick and kick and kick like my life depends on it. Mine may or may not, but hers certainly does. Civilians aren’t trained for this kind of smoke inhalation.

I’m exhausted, but I keep kicking. I straighten my body and feel my feet begin to sink, just before they’re met by the bottom of the pool.

I stand realizing we’ve made it to the shallow end, where the water’s only three feet deep.

“We did it!” I say, feeling the rush of saving this girl’s life.

She’s in my arms, panting and coughing.

For the first time I get a good look at her. Damn, this girl is absolutely beautiful.

Her coughing slows and then quickly stops.

The rush of the moment, the way she looks, and how she feels in my arms overcomes me.

My gloved hand takes her by the back of her head and I bring her face to mine, kissing her like we’re the last two people on earth.

  CHAPTER 3

  Amy

I lie in my bed and stare up at the ceiling.

My adrenaline is still pumping. It’s only been ten minutes since he rescued me, and even less since our kiss.

What a rush. If the life or death experience of the fire wasn’t enough to get my blood pumping, along comes an absolutely F-I-N-E fireman to save me, and take my breath away.

I don’t even giggle at the irony of a fireman taking all the air out of my lungs. This is serious.

The way he effortlessly scooped me up in his arms. How he carried me like I weighed nothing and then jumped into the swimming pool, careful to tuck my head so I didn’t get hurt. And then he kissed me. He kissed me like I’ve never been kissed before, and likely never will again. I mean when will I get rescued and then have my night in shining armor lock lips with me after he saves me? Probability? Zero.

There’s a knock on the door and I shake my head as I breathe out hard. I was off in lala land, thinking about him.

I get up off my bed and pass by the teenybopper posters on my wall. They’re more like pictures I cut out of Cosmo, but they work just fine and dandy for wall decorations. Zac Effron. Justin Beiber. Zayn Malik. They’re all there, and they’re all…boys.

I had never thought about an actual man before. It had never crossed my mind.

I swing open the door expecting to find my mom, but to my utter surprise my mom is the furthest thing from what’s standing in the door.

He’s so wide in that suit of his, it’s like his shoulders are wider than my doorframe.

  “Are you okay?” he asks.

“Yeah,” I say, feeling my bottom lip quiver. I’m partly intimidated by his sheer size and authority that fireman’s suit gives him, but what’s really making my inner butterflies fly in circles is him and him alone.

He has some dark spots on his skin from what looks like soot or something connected to the fire. He’s rough,
rugged, and giving me a look like he’s ready.

“The EMTs are downstairs checking everyone out. I cleared you already.”

  “Cleared me?”

“You were with me. I know you were safe during that ordeal.”

  “Thank you.”

“No need to thank me. Just doing my job.”

And there’s another job I’d really like for you to do right about now. I’m burning up inside and I want you to rip these clothes off and put out the fire between my legs.
